ORIGIN is an African-centred, ‘Coming-into-Manhood’ Rites of Passage Programme that combines personal development and community guidance for young Men (13-18 years). The programme tackles real issues facing young Men and supports families to raise Son’s.
For a period of 1 year, groups of young Men enrol on ORIGIN who together prepare for ‘the journey of their life’. Once on the programme the young Men access a curriculum of four modules designed around the natural elements of Water, Fire, Air and Earth.
The modules represent carefully designed workshops, seminars, challenging residential experiences and character-building ordeals. A team of facilitators who also work with families support the young men.
ORIGIN Graduates are those young people who have completed all four elements of the programme. They have the option to stay involved in the organisation. As Graduates they develop their own projects, are trained as Peer Educators, support the new intake of young people and become Champions for the organisation.
The Village
The Village brings everyone who has ever been involved in the project together to consider issues that affect the wellbeing of the community. Village events EDUTAIN, which means they combine education with celebration.
Community Spirit
Community Spirit are fundraising functions organised by Tokunbo who coordinates some of the best music collectives in London to come together to support our work. Teams of DJ’s use their influence to attract and entertain audiences to top quality sounds at Community Spirit events. Everyone who gets involved provide their services freely, which means that we can raise funds and keep enrolment fees for families down to a minimum.
Evaluation Statement
ORIGIN …is about us as young Black Men preparing for Manhood; confronting our fears; trusting each other; representing our origin's; uniting as one; knowing our role in the community; discovering our African roots with self-discipline; having new experiences; resolving our problems; linking the things that affect us from our past to what's happening now…. It's preparing us for our future.
